We have started up our regular meetings every Monday at 1 – 3 pm, either in the Carnegie Theatre or Classroom 2 on the 3rd floor. Check the poster on the daily events board near the front desk to check for that day’s location. We are busy learning new songs that different community singers have brought in , as well as learning songs for the Heart of the City Festival Musical Theatre Showcase. The Musical Theatre Showcase performances are on October 28, and 30 at 6:30-10-30 pm at the Russian Hall, 600 Campbell Ave. It is an opportunity to hear over 30 songs which have been performed and created in a variety of musical theatre productions in the downtown eastside since 2002, songs from, “I Love the Downtown Eastside; In the Heart of the City: the DTES Community Play; The Shadows Project; Condemned-the Opera; A DTES Romeo and Juliet; and Bruce the Musical.

The Heart of the City Festival also offers us the opportunity to sing at the outdoor “Illuminating the Four Corners” event at Main and Hastings on November 7 at 8 pm, and in the gala closing concert at the Ukrainian Hall , 800 E. Pender the next afternoon, November 8 at 3 pm followed by a community dinner and dance. Click the link for more information. http://www.heartofthecityfestival.com/

We are looking forward to an upcoming workshop with local guest artist , Dalannah Gail Bowen, who will be teaching us a song or two from her roots on October 19, 1- 3 pm in the Carnegie Theatre. Dalannah Gail Bowen is a versatile high-energy vocalist whose experience as a performer ranges from intimate nightclub and café shows to fronting big bands and concert tours. Gail started her musical career working in an all-female band out of Winnipeg, Manitoba opening for The Guess Who and The Monkees. Since then, Dalannah's career has given her the opportunity to play with many of the greats in the jazz and blues industry. Besides her work as an accomplished singer, she is also a songwriter, actor, playwright, published poet and musical activist. Since her early years, Dalannah, then known as Gail Bowen, was active in the movement to influence change. Currently, Dalannah has taken the lead on an initiative to develop the Downtown Eastside Centre For The Arts. This initiative will afford the opportunity for everyone who wants to experience art in a supportive environment the opportunity to do so. We very much look forward to this opportunity to learn and sing with her!

CARNEGIE VILLAGE PROJECT UPCOMING SUMMER INTENSIVE

We have just wrapped up our spring gatherings last Saturday and will be pausing for a summer break throughout July.

In our gatherings we have been learning songs from our different ethnic and family roots: English, Goan, Japanese, and Ukrainian, as well as the Rolling Stones’ song, “As Tears Go By”, a rock ballad from the 60’s. So far we have been singing in English, Japanese, Ukrainian and Goan in unison and 2 part harmony. We have listened to a variety of songs generously offered by several participating singers with First Nations, German, musical theatre, sea shanty, English folk and 60’s rock classic roots.

We will resume REGULAR WEEKLY MEETINGS EVERY MONDAY from 1-3 pm. from SEPTEMBER 14, mostly in the Carnegie Theatre. Check the poster for any change in location. In the fall sessions, we will also be learning a Chinese folksong, a German lullaby, a Japanese-Canadian song, a First Nations song, Afro-Canadian song and a labour song; as well as any new songs offered by Carnegie villagers. I have invited guest artists to teach and share their songs—Dalannah Bowen/Afro-Canadian song; Olivier Wong/Chinese folksong, and Matthew Sheena/First Nations.

In the summer, I will be offering 3 WORKSHOPS on consecutive Mondays, AUGUST 17, 24 and 31 from 1- 3 pm in the Carnegie Theatre. In these workshops we will focus on building healthy voice production, in tune singing, deep listening and improvisational skills.

I look forward to the opportunity to present our Carnegie Village songs, stories and poetry as a work in progress during the Heart of the City Festival in October or November. Our final performance will be either later this year or early in 2010.

I look forward to a continuing relationship.

Beverly Dobrinsky
Carnegie Artist in Residence

Blessings!

Carnegie Villagers singing a traditional Ukranian blessing song for weddings and birthdays etc.

Mnohaja Lita 2 Parts May 16 09.mp3

<span style="font-weight: bold; We will be starting Saturday meetings on May 2, from 1-3 pm as well, and continuing every 2nd Saturday until June 13. See below for a schedule of meetings and locations.
We started out with a discussion of our roots, and discovered quite a magnificent range of material that we can share--- everything from our different ethnic and family roots; Irish, English, Goan, German, First Nations, Ukrainian, Canadian, Scottish; to jazz, big band and popular music of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, as well as original songs expressing rootedness in home, land and country.

We are learning a Ukrainian ritual blessing song, an English folksong, and an original song by Carnegie Villager, Mike Richter. As part of the learning process, I will be offering vocal technique, and ear training exercises to develop our musical ears and singing voices. We will be continuing to gather songs from our community, and adding these to our repertoire.

Please come and add your VOICE to the Carnegie Village.

Meeting Times:

Monday, April 27 Classroom 2/3rd floor Saturday, May 2 Classroom 2/3rd floor

Monday, May 11 Carnegie Theatre Saturday, May 16 Classroom2/3rd floor

Monday, May 25 Classroom 2/3rd floor Saturday, May 30 Classroom 2/3rd floor

Monday, June 8 Carnegie Theatre Saturday, June 13 Carnegie Theatre

Beverly Dobrinsky
Carnegie Artist in Residence
Carnegievillage@gmail.com
1st Floor Info.Desk or 604-665-2220/msgs

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://carnegievillage.blogspot.com/2009/03/intern-murray-black-and-artist-in.html' title='Day One!
