We had a very successful first meeting on March 30 in the Carnegie Theatre and by the time you are reading this, we will have had our 2nd meeting on April 13. We will be having regular meetings every 2nd Monday at 1-3pm, either in the Carnegie Theatre or upstairs in Classroom 2. We will be starting Saturday meetings on May 2, from 1-3 pm as well, and continuing every 2nd Saturday until June 13. See below for a schedule of meetings and locations.
We started out with a discussion of our roots, and discovered quite a magnificent range of material that we can share--- everything from our different ethnic and family roots; Irish, English, Goan, German, First Nations, Ukrainian, Canadian, Scottish; to jazz, big band and popular music of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, as well as original songs expressing rootedness in home, land and country.

We are learning a Ukrainian ritual blessing song, an English folksong, and an original song by Carnegie Villager, Mike Richter. As part of the learning process, I will be offering vocal technique, and ear training exercises to develop our musical ears and singing voices. We will be continuing to gather songs from our community, and adding these to our repertoire.

Please come and add your VOICE to the Carnegie Village.

About Beverly Dobrinsky, Carnegie Centre's 2009 Artist in Residence

BEVERLY DOBRINSKY

Vocalist, composer, and teacher of voice and Kodaly musicianship, Beverly received her Bmus from UBC in 1986, and her Kodaly Musicianship teacher training at University of Victoria in 1990.

She directed the HUNGRY GHOSTS, a contemporary chamber ensemble, 1983-1986 and RAZOM SESTRE, a women’s Balkan ensemble, 1990-91. She has composed and arranged music for all of these ensembles and has produced two ZEELLIA CDs, performing with ZEELLIA across Canada and in NY city. She has also recorded soundtrack vocals for many Canadian independent films including NFB film, BEING CARIBOU, UNCLE EDDIE’S GUIDE TO ART APPRECIATION, and ENEMY ALIENS, for which she created the music.

In addition to performing with and managing ZEELLIA, she currently directs 3 local choirs, and teaches private voice and Kodaly musicianship classes. She has been a music educator for the last 20 years, teaching in various Montessori schools, the Vancouver Academy of Music, Vancouver Community College, and the GICEL Summer Camp on Mayne Island. She joined the staff of the RENFREW COMMUNITY PERFORMANCE PROJECT in 2006 where she directs the choir and has composed music for choir and brass ensemble that has been performed at the RENFREW RAVINE MOON FESTIVAL in 2006 and 2007.
